Confessions of Clutter Queens and Our Spring Cleaning Adventures

Spring cleaning isn't just about tidying up; it's a ritual that can transform both our physical spaces and mental well-being. As we discussed in our latest podcast episode, approaching spring cleaning strategically can make the difference between an overwhelming chore and a satisfying accomplishment.

I was surprised when Sarah told me about her method of cleaning room-by-room rather than by task. Instead of dusting the entire house at once, then vacuuming everything, focusing on completely finishing one room creates immediate visual rewards. Brandi agreed that she does this with her home and my mind was blown! I had never thought of it this way. Although, determining if you should keep the door open or closed after cleaning it was different for both of them.

The tools we use for cleaning can significantly impact efficiency. I also never heard of drill brush attachments, which apparently make shower cleaning dramatically easier and anything really that needs deep cleaning. I can’t rave enough about my vacuum, the Rainbow - which is a vacuum, shop vac, and air purifier all in one! We agreed that the "buy once, cry once" philosophy applies here – spending more upfront on items that last for decades ultimately saves money and reduces waste. For those with pets, especially, a high-quality vacuum designed to handle pet hair can be life-changing. Get the Rainbow…I know a guy!

Organization emerged as a common challenge for all of us. Sarah's approach of using a dedicated cleaning cart that follows her from room to room keeps all supplies at hand, eliminating the distraction of leaving to find cleaning products. I never heard of a cleaning cart before Sarah, but I’m interested in one now. Just moving that thing around with me in the house, I can already envision my life being move productive. Meanwhile, I lean into using Marie Kondo's methodology and ask the key question – "Does this bring me joy?" – If it doesn’t, it goes bye-bye!

Brandi asked about the organization tips/tricks that are trending right now and if there are ones that are overrated, which Sarah had some strong opinions about. Social media showcases those beautiful clear containers for pantry items, but we all agreed these aren't actually practical. Plus, since all of these items are trending now, they are also hella expensive and nobody can afford that right now.

The importance of maintenance cannot be overstated. Little daily habits like making your bed, opening curtains, resetting living spaces before bed, and wiping down frequently touched surfaces (door handles, light switches, remotes) prevent bigger cleaning projects from becoming overwhelming. As Kylie Perkins wisely suggests, treat your home like a restaurant – closers clean for openers, so you should reset your space each evening for your future self. And don’t forget about those items that are often overlooked! HVAC filters need to be changed out regularly, clean behind refrigerators and underneath appliances, and vacuum air vents. These often-overlooked tasks extend appliance life and can reduce energy costs significantly.

Finally, celebrate your cleaning accomplishments. Whether you top off your cleaning experience with lighting candles, walk around with some sage to reset the energy, or simply sitting down to enjoy your freshly cleaned space, acknowledging your hard work provides closure to the cleaning process. A clean, organized home creates mental space for creativity and relaxation – the ultimate reward for your spring cleaning efforts.
